ISO 9001 is the most commonly used international quality standard for management of business systems

Quality management system (QMS) is a formal system that includes documenting the structure, responsibilities and processes required to achieve effective quality management. In addition, quality management is defined by American Society for Quality as follows: “The application of a quality management system in managing a process to achieve maximum customer satisfaction at the lowest overall cost to the organization while continuing to improve the process”

  • In 1987 the International Organization for Standardization published its first Quality Management standards, ISO 9000. The purpose of the ISO 9000 Quality Management standard was to provide guidance and tools for companies and organizations who want to ensure that their products and services consistently meet customer’s requirements and that quality is improved consistently
  • ISO 9000 :1994 version emphasized quality assurance via preventive actions, and required evidence of compliance with documented procedures
  • ISO 9000: 2000 version changed to quality management system with emphasis on process effectiveness via process performance metrics, and so reduced the emphasis on having documented procedures – a process approach model
  • ISO 9001: 2008 QMS version has no requirement changes but to make the intentions clearer
  • ISO 9000:2015- QMS- Vocabulary and fundamentals
  • ISO 9001:2015- QMS Requirements
